Community Violence Prevention Action Group Minutes
March 9, 2010
Meeting Chair – Jill Olson
Those Present: Brianne Noll, Jennifer Samartano, Lindsey Katz, Jill Olson, Angel Hernandez, Sheryl Frye, Aaron Lockhart, and Kathy Hicks.
Follow Up Items:
A. Enough is Enough: Sheryl from Support and Advocacy at NIU shared some information about the Enough is Enough activities. Wednesday, April 7th will be a Community/University Violence Prevention Roundtable. She would also like community advocates to join forces to share resources and program information. Monday night Cease Fire from Chicago will be the Keynote speaker. Umbrellas for Peace Walk will be Thursday afternoon. There are many student groups doing activities and the student population is passionate about violence prevention. Tom shared that he had contact with a young man from Liberated Minds. They would like to do a Violence Prevention Workshop on Tuesday April 6th. This event is geared towards females only. Sheryl suggested that Tom contact Melissa Williams.
B. CAC Fundraiser – Monique: Jill shared that the Child Abuse Prevention Event will be a walk on May 15, 2010.
C. Plan for Strategic Planning Mtg in March: Kathy handed out a Media Action Plan packet. Please review it and make comments and/or suggestions and bring to group for discussion at the May meeting.
D. Violence Prevention Action Group Chair: After some discussion Tom and Lindsay agreed to co-chair the meeting. Kathy will send Lindsay follow up information in reference to the job description for a chair of a DCP/SAFE Action Group.
E. Hands Around the Courthouse - This event is scheduled for April 29, 2010 at noon, and will be held at the DeKalb County Courthouse.
NEW BUSINESS
I. New items, round table concerns/ideas/projects:
March of Dimes Fundraiser – Tom shared that there is a fundraiser on March 11th. He will be participating in this march. There is a women’s self defense workshop on April 18th thru the YMCA and Safe Passage. This event is in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness month.
Review of Calendar of Events: Item is postponed until we get a calendar. The calendar we have used in the past is form the National Crime Prevention Council. Tom will check with them and Kathy will check with Monique.
Media Action Plan for March/April: Tom shared that there will be some media information on the events he reported on. Jill reported that last year she submitted an article for the Daily Chronicle about Sexual Assault Awareness Month. She will follow up and send a new article to the local newspaper.
February/March: Angel reported on the Enough is Enough Campaign. Six of the eight schools have completed the pledge making process. The Prevention Team with Ben Gordon Center is currently working on mounting the cards for display purposes.
II. Agency Reports:

Safe Passage: Tom shared that they are looking for an Executive Director and have been advertising for a candidate. Applications are due March 18th.
Children’s Home and Aid: Lindsay shared that they just received a grant from Say it Out Loud a state wide campaign to prevent mental health stigma. She is currently working on planning this promotion.
FSA: No one present.
YSB: They were asked to speak at G-KHS about dating violence and work annually to address this issue. She is in week seven for the anger management group for high school students. There is a chemical magic show next Tuesday at 7:30 at NIU. Donations are welcomed.
Sycamore PD: Tom shared that he contacted Sycamore to encourage some one to join this Action Group. He included the email address for the School Police Liaisons so we can share this information.
De Kalb PD: Updated that gangs are more active recently with gangs coming out from Aurora to support the DeKalb members. There was a recent incident with some major injuries. Tension is high but the PD is working to adjust the patrolling and staffing.
4C: No one present to report.
DeKalb Schools: Aaron reported that things are going well in the schools. He is continuing to keep a high profile to prevent any gang issues from occurring.
Elder Care Services: Tom reported that they are looking for an Executive Director.
CASA: Spring training for new advocates starting April 5th. They are looking for a class size of 10 people.
Prevent Child Abuse Illinois: Gearing up for April and have the community packet online. There are three statewide kick-off events. There is a WRAP Process Training in Sinissippi on March 17, 2010. For further information, please check out their website at preventchildabuseillinois.org. In addition there is Northern Region Lan (Local Area Network) meeting scheduled for April 14th at the Regional Office of Education Community Outreach Building.
