Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
Tuesday February 16, 2010
Those Present: Mary Hess, Kathy Hicks, Zandra Garcia, Jason Nicol, Asa Young,
I. Approval of Agenda: Approved by Mary Hess and 2nd by Kendra
II. Partner Ship congregations: No Report
III. DCAHRM: Kathy went to a last meeting, said it the focus was on work etiquette. Kishwaukee Education Consortium is having a Job Fair on soft skill programs at the work place for 8th grade students.
IV. Education/Sports AG: Kathy said South East Asian Group will have a Meeting in May and will be discussing Culture differences.
Kathy and Mary Hess are working on a strategic Plan for the ED/Sports group.
V. Property Managers: Discussion of Property problems in Amber Manor and University Village Apartments. Kathy will contact Kendra Chaplin to participate in the Violence Prevention Group.
VI. Community Violence Prevention Committee: Enough is Enough is having a Campaign in March. Violence Prevention Group will be participating in this Campaign by going out to the schools and having them make a pledge that there hands will not hurt someone else, the pledge will be written on craft paper that has a hand design. Violence Prevention Group is presently looking for a Chair person so please spread the word or let us know if you know someone who may be interested.
VII. Safe Kids: No Meeting this month. Kathy did say that we will also be planning a Strategic Plan for this group. DCP/ SAFE still has Car Seats available for those who are in great need for one, please call the Prevention Group.
VIII. Spartan Reach: Had their Parent Night recently and it went very well, students talked about there prevention posters they made with a message on substance abuse or tobacco.
IX. Project Success: Hispanic Coalition will be going to the Shed Aquarium. Centennial Counseling in Sandwich and Yorkville. YEPS Grant is due in Feb 22 and Community Grant is due in March 1st.
X. Social Norms: Presently we are collecting approval dates from schools on when to survey them. Survey questions will be the same but with extension added (1sheet) with question on R/X drug abuse.
XI. Safe and Drug Free Project: Kathy and Kris have been working on writing the grant for the continuation for this federal Grant, should be turned in by the end of this week not due till next week. Kathy will outline a budget for the steering committee.
XII. Latino Action Group: H1N1 Clinic at Conexion Comunidad date is still pending, Census is looking for bilingual individuals who would like to work for them call Conexion Comunidad for more information. Discuss Dream Act Fund Raiser at Conexion Comunidad in March 19th at 5pm.
XIII. Media Report: Targeting African American and Hispanic Population on Parenting Skills using radio ads
XIV. DeKalb County Keys Initiative: Kishwaukee Family YMCA will be hosting Family Skate Night will have prizes, games, music and snacks. It will start 6pm-10pm cost is free. Mary Hess mentions that they have 100 essays by kids who wrote about people who have made a difference in DeKalb youth. They will pick 3 top winners. Mary is working on budgeting to producing about 400 books with all the essays that were turned in. Ideal Industries will be lending there Marketing Team to design messages for adults.
XV. Website Pictures and Updates on Progress: Jacque from DCP/SAFE needs pictures of steering committee to put in Web site next month meeting we will be taking pictures so look pretty and smile!
XVI. Additional of possible New Action Group SIMBA and SIMSA: Kathy has talked to LaMetra Curry from this group to participate in the Steering Committee, we are seeing an increase in substance abuse in the African American youth and hopefully they can help reach out.
