Steering Committee Meeting
January 19, 2010
Those present: Mary Hess, Kathy Hicks, Kris Povlsen, Zandra Garcia, Jason Nicol, Tony Stahl, Tana Knetsch, and Asa Young.
I. Approval of agenda
II. DeKalb County Keys Initiative: Mary reported that KEYS is working on an essay contest for students in grades 6-12. They are looking for children to share a story about someone who makes a difference in their lives. There will be cash prizes, a radio spot, and book publication for the winner. The grant proposal for Horizon Community mapping has been submitted. There is a YMCA KEYS night planned for February.
III. Media Report: Tana shared that she is available for any assistance to cover any social service or community events. She will connect with Mary to cover the KEYS essay contest.
IV. Partnership Congregations: DCP/SAFE is continuing to look towards connecting with Love Inc. The group discussed opportunities and direction towards reaching this goal.
V. DCAHRM: A the last meeting human resource managers received “parent coupons” to place in break rooms for parents courtesy of the Social Norms programming. The coupons are tools used to help parents talk to their children about healthy choices.
VI. Education/Sports AG: Planning the YMCA night, and for Violence Prevention Week activities.
VII. Property Managers: No report.
VIII. Community Violence Prevention Committee: No meeting in December will be planning a meeting in January. Will continue to review their Strategic Plan in upcoming meetings.
IX. Safe Kids: Currently operating as a networking group and not meeting regularly. Kathy will help them connect for Healthy Kids day at the YMCA. Michelle and Kathy went to the trailer and could not find the disks needed to run the program. Kathy will contact the ID company and look into purchasing a new program. There were about 20 car seats in the trailer that were nearing expiration. The group agreed to keep a few in reserve at the trailer. Kris will follow up with the SAFE/KIDS action group members to see if they would be able to use the seats in the near future. If they do not need for them Kathy will contact the Health Department and other local social service agencies.
X. Spartan Reach/OSCAR: The two programs of Sycamore School Dist have 300 students grades K-12 participating. They met their goal of getting into the high school level. They structure activities in math and reading. Next week is the parent community day. Kathy will attend and represent the Social Norms programming and Tony spoke with Mary about attending as well.
XI. Social Norms Project: Going well. They are talking about the survey process.
XII. Project Success: The group has previewed the literacy posters. The library events are currently in place.
XIII. Safe and Drug Free Project: It is time to resubmit the grant for next year. Kris will return to help Kathy with the project.
XIV. Latino Action Group: Zandra reported that Connection Communidad and Kishwaukee Community Hospital are working together to put together a free screening for health risks in April. Specific dates are not yet set. An NIU student organization called the Dream Action Group is looking for a sponsor for the dream actions scholarship. Connection Communidad is having their annual meeting on February 1st at 6:00 p.m. at Connection Communidad. Every one is invited
XV. Website: Jacque Norris is continuing to upload information. The goal is to have website updates on the agenda at all of the Action Group meetings.
Other: Kris brought up Action Group and Affiliated Group definitions as it relates to the DCP/SAFE coalition. He discussed the meaning of affiliates vs. action groups and invited the group to share thoughts and ideas as they relate to how these agreements fit in with DCP/SAFE. The group agreed that Kris will review the agreements and bring them back to the group.
Tony Stahl motioned the DCP/SAFE officially thank Kris Povlsen for everything he has done for the community.
